This year, the kids and I did handmade gifts for Father’s Day. Prithvi baked a chocolate cake from scratch and it was yum-o-delicious!  It was actually quite the feat for a first cake and I’m amazed at how fantastic it turned out.  Kiki made a card and a picture frame-esque thingy with a photograph of her and daddy.  The card was begun at preschool and she finished it off at home, with a whole bunch of squiggles which she said was her… Read more »

When I bought this yarn from my LYS a few weeks ago, I knew that I wanted to knit something girly with it. What better than a little spring cardigan for my 3-year-old daughter, Kirtana.  So, I dug out my Barbara Walker Stitch Dictionary, picked out a stitch pattern I liked and began knitting.  Every time I would pick up this sweater to knit a few rows, Kiki would ask me, “Mama, are you all done?”  That alone was sheer… Read more »

This is what we saw on one of our bike rides last week…. What a perfect day to ride horses (or bikes)!  Time to bring out the spring knitting, don’t you think?  I was contemplating what yarn to use, when I looked at these beauties from my recently frogged Dark and Stormy Cardi and thought… Plan B! Same yarn, different pattern! I’ve been wanting to knit the Garter Yoke Cardi for a while now and so as always, I went trolling… Read more »

I’d almost forgotten how exciting it is to knit sweaters for the tiny humans.  You cast on, knit for a few days and before you know it you’re casting off — it’s like the sweater knits itself.  Now that’s instant gratification! When Kiki announced one day that I had to knit her a blue sweater, my heart sang.  I knew immediately that I wanted to knit her a Tiny Tea Leaves since I love my Tea Leaves Cardigan so much.  She… Read more »

The Windschief Hat is probably the quickest knit I’ve done in a really long time.  The pattern is so addictive and has the perfect balance of mindless stockinette with some interesting bits thrown in, in the form of twisted rib stitches.  Yarn overs and decreases makes the ribbing twist all the way to the top :: clev-ER. This is a great pattern by designer Stephen West and definitely gets two thumbs up from me!  The only change I made to this hat was… Read more »

I was talking to a friend about next year a few days ago without realizing that “next year” is already here!  It has been really good to get back to our routine lives after an insanely busy yet wonderful holiday season.  Vineet and I even managed to take off for a short break this past weekend to celebrate our 13th anniversary.  My mom offered to look after the kids and we jumped at her offer before she changed her mind!  We… Read more »

Over the weekend, we visited the Vancouver Christmas Market to enjoy some holiday festivities but mostly to indulge in German yumminess and spiced mulled wine, mmm!  The Ice King and Queen and The Nutcracker were some of the stars But look at all those knitted hats (probably machine-knit, but still!)  Nothing like a hat to keep you warm on a cold evening …and of course, hot apple cider helps too! especially if you sip it through a stick of cinnamon  There was more knitting, this time as… Read more »

A five minute walk from our house leads to this trail The perfect Sunday evening walk when you have a couple of stir crazy kids who just want to get out of the house Who wants to stay stuck indoors when there are leaves to be kicked Or treasures to be picked (am I the only mother to discover stones and sticks and pieces of string and scribbled notes stuffed into every pocket?) Or whispers to be listened too And… Read more »

The kids were out till late last night trick-or-treating and they came back with a stash so awesome that I’m tempted to call dibs on some of their goodies.  But I shall refrain since this is their stash, so I’ll stick with yarn!  Being a part of a smaller community like ours is great for celebrations like this where everyone gets involved and it all ends with a good old late night BBQ.  This huge sucker wasn’t on display in our town last… Read more »

It’s been a tough couple days but I have declared that life’s too short to sit around and mope.  Also, a pile of nom nom is always good for the soul… I signed up for another round of the the MadTosh Sweater Club since I loved it so much the last time.  The first club mailing was Tosh Sport and the color I picked was Composition Book Grey (Grey-Gray? tomato-tomahto)  The perfect shade of grey which will make a lovely… Read more »
